It was about time Pak Yan Lau made her return to KRAAK’s nomadic stage, and Walter's, as her musical horizons have continued to shift and expand over the years. A pianist and improviser through and through, she draws on her collection of instruments and sound sources to create minimal mosaics that can unfold into the most dazzling forms. In her most recent explorations, she uses homemade ceramic kalimbas, prepared piano, typatune and electronics to open every door onto unexplored sonic territories.
Since 2019, this ensemble has been exploring the intertwined paths of different musical traditions, seeking out points of encounter where these paths open onto something new. Led by Australian percussionist Will Guthrie, Ensemble Nist-Nah delves into the fascinating spectrum of gamelan music through contemplative tonal meditations and trance-inducing orchestrations. The group combines this with an exploratory approach to percussion, drawing on sources as diverse as Roscoe Mitchell, Michael Ranta and Mike Cooper. A true sensory challenge, but also a delightful excursion into melodic possibilities that lie well beyond our reach.
